The anime is already in its 4th season, so of course everything in no longer new. But that’s not what I meant.
So season 4 rolled out and the two new characters are like recolors of of Mikuru and Mizuki, the new variation of “Geinoujin wa Card ga Inochi” or the transformation scene music sounded weird, and after watching episode 154, I finally concluded that they’re at it again. What am I getting at here?
From the looks of it the anime had forgotten at how special Special Appeals were. This is not something anyone can perform on their first try and for some reason Nono and Risa (and the rest of the girls post S1 for that matter) managed to pull it off. Special Appeals in the anime are performed when the idols gave their all in their performance and made an impact or impression of everyone in the stage. In order to do that, the idols must train and discover their potential.
This what made Ichigo and season 1 a joy to watch. Ichigo pulled off a Special Appeal on her first audition and everyone, including the then top idol Kanzaki Mizuki, were shocked. It’s something not everyone can pull off and yet Ichigo managed it out of pure passion. Granted she’s gifted (spoiler), but keep in mind she had trouble pulling off another appeal until she trained very hard. She didn’t event have her own aura at the time. It’s a sign that Ichigo had potential to become something greater and it’s fun seeing her do silly things like climbing up Angely Mountain with no climbing gear, decided to get a giant Christmas tree from the snowy mountains to a girl, and many more. Where is she now? She’s the current Top Idol and she definitely earned the title because we saw her how she started as a random girl to one of the best idols in the industry by working really hard. Her success was palpable, you can taste and feel it. Everything were new to Ichigo and watching her do her own Aikatsu with her friends what made season 1 great and memorable.
After S1, every new idol can now magically perform Special Appeals and coords were handed down to them without seeing them working hard for it. Nono and Risa are interesting characters, but I had nothing else to look forward to. They’ll go to the usual rounds, dance the same song until they get another song, and repeat like their seniors did in S3. We may never see them struggle making their own shows, or even see them perfecting their signatures. Everything is no longer new.
I am jumping to conclusions and who knows, they may bring back that S1 charm again. But for now and after watching S2-S3, things doesn’t look good from here.
Speaking of S3, Hinaki is the only idol I adored. Sure she can pull off appeals no problem, but everything were not handed down to her. She didn’t became Vivid Kiss’s muse just because she’s the designer’s only idol or something like that. She worked hard for the title. Her charming and cheerful personality also helped seal the deal. She’s much like Ichigo, Aoi and Ran in their early days.
And to think I initially thought Sumire is a good character with potential. Sumire is a “Glass Doll” — Beautiful, but empty inside.
